President Bush today nominated a Texas lawyer who serves as White House counsel, Harriet Miers, to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court ”“ a pick that apparently was pre-approved by Senate Democratic leadership.
Link.
When a row over Roberts was beginning to emerge, Bush met with Democratic leaders. After the meeting, the Democratic leaders said they would support Roberts. At least one commentator speculated that they had made a deal: Dems don't oppose Roberts, and Bush would throw away his next nomination. I'm speculating that Miers is his throw-away nomination.
It wouldn't surprise me at all. Democrats on the Hill say Bush keeps his promises.
At least to them.
But again, let's hope I'm wrong. Let's hope Bush knows what he's doing and has made a good stealth pick. The future revitalization of the family depends on it.
