Though his fans tend to be obnoxiously fanatical and he has fallen into the self-righteous political posturing common to his profession, this concert sounds great. Buffet plays good music, there are few venues more charming than Wrigley, and the weather is promising.
Whatever the reason, some 78,000 Buffett fans will transform Wrigley Field into Margaritaville on Sunday and Monday, as the storied ballpark hosts its first ever full-fledged concert.
"It's going to be a once in a lifetime concert," said Susi O'Neil, social director of the Chicago Parrothead Club, a non-profit group of Buffett fans who organize social and community outreach activities. "It's going to be so overwhelming that the city of Chicago is going to say, 'Oh my God, we had no idea.' "
Soaking up the sunshine and three decades worth of laid-back melodies, Buffett fans are known to travel cross-country to follow the 58-year-old crooner's tours, creating an island paradise wherever they go. No outfit is too summery amid the straw hats and grass skirts (often on men), bathing suits and brightly colored leis. Many fans plan their vacations around when and where Buffett is playing.
"I think they've underestimated the attendance," O'Neil said. "They're going to have huge crowds standing outside and listening to the music." Laughing, she added, "I honestly don't think they'll ever have another music concert [at Wrigley]."
