The writing isn't great, but a young Irishman has penned a decent piece: 17 Cultural Reasons this European Never Wants to Live in America. I don't agree with all of it, but he raises some good points ("Too many over-the-top positive adjectives like "awesome" get thrown around so much that they really mean nothing"), many of which I'd never thought of ("You guys smile way too much. It's f***ing annoying! How can you tell when someone means it?"). He also raises this point (one which I've thought about . . . a lot):

I've even seen 60 year olds get IDed. Nowhere else in the world do they ID me now that I'm clearly in my late 20s. A few times I haven't had my passport (the most important document I own that I really don't want to get beer spilled over) in my jeans pocket and have simply been refused entry.
I find it incredible that drinking age is 21, but you give 16 year olds licenses to drive cars and you can buy a rifle at age 18. And you can't walk around outside with an open drink in most states (but apparently putting it in a brown bag while you drink it makes it OK). I don't even drink, and I find these laws nonsensical.

Good bar fodder for this evening's libations:
* There's legislation on the table in the Netherlands that would ban tourists from visiting coffee shops that sell marijuana. That's fine, Amsterdam. We're not letting you into Build-A-Bear.
* People magazine has named Bradley Cooper the Sexiest Man Alive. All eyes will be on Bradley to see what kind of sexiest man he'll be. The first few weeks are very important in setting the tone for your term.
* On the other hand, congratulations to our security guard Guillermo, was named the Mexiest Man Alive.
