Whenever I hear the word "temperance," I remember Chesterton's observation that the word "temperance," in his time, was widely abused. People used it to mean "abstinence" or "prohibited," instead of properly using it to mean "moderation." Well, I recently learned a new meaning of the word. It's the name of a municipality in Michigan. Temperance, Michigan is located about ninety miles directly east of me, but I'd never heard of it, until a TDE reader sent me a link to Temperance Distilling Company.

It looks like they make some interesting stuff, like a cherry pie liqueur. They also make "Alcohol Infused Whipped Cream." It comes in six flavors: Raspberry, Chocolate, Cherry, Caramel, Orange and Vanilla flavors. Link. I don't think I could ever drink (eat) either one in quantity, but I'd like to try 'em.

Best Newly-Discovered Alcohol Site?

While checking out the Temperance links, I looked more closely at MicroLiquor. It might be one of the most interesting drinking websites I've seen this year. Lots of interesting stuff, like this list of ten books for liquor entrepreneurs. I don't plan on starting my own liquor business, but I think I'd like to have this book (hint to my wife):

The Complete Book of Spirits: A Guide to Their History, Production, and Enjoyment by Anthony Dias Blue
In ten captivating chapters, readers are treated to everything they ever wanted to know about their favorite liquors, including vodka, aquavit, tequila, and whiskey. Blue also provides step-by-step instructions on how to host spirit tastings to educate your palate and to help you and your friends discover your favorite brands and blends. For every chapter and every spirit, there is also a handy tasting-notes section, with Blue's expert comments and his favorites, along with price points.
If you've ever wondered about the difference between potato and wheat vodkas, or between mescal and tequila or American and Irish whiskeys, or what makes single malt Scotch so desirable, look no further.

Amazon Me

It's that time of year again. I earn 95% of my blogging revenue during the next six weeks. I don't have a donation button or anything like that. I just request patronage through Amazon.

If you're ordering from Amazon, I'd be greatly appreciative if you'd access Amazon through the link in the upper-right-hand corner. Amazon gives me a 5% kickback on all purchases you make after accessing its site through TDE. Thank you!
