Dwight Silverman at Tech Blog has described Eric Scheske's dream job:
Bars definitely have their own personalities, which is the sum of the characters who patronize it multiplied by the atmosphere of the venue, to the Nth power of the owner squared. (I knew high school algebra would come in handy eventually.)
The other night I stopped by a pub that just opened near me and the owner told me he was going to have WiFi there. I was musing on this and later thought . . .
What if this bar hired a decent writer to blog about the parade of characters that come through each night? Give him or her a table in a secluded corner, a wireless-enabled laptop, a digital camera (or a webcam!) free drinks and lots of latitude. Of course, the writer would have be very good, with the ability to interview people, observe events, capture the humor, drama and silliness that goes on in a bar night after night.
There would also need to be some diplomatic skill involved -- you don't want an angry patron showing up on Saturday night after reading what had been posted about her on Friday night.
