Post-Vacation Dropsy
I'd love to hear from you: Do you feel wiped out after vacations? I mean, completely wiped out for a couple of days, maybe over a week? After we got back from Manhattan, it took me nearly ten days to start feeling normal again. I didn't think much of it, since it was an intense week and involved, at the end, a ton of driving. But this last vacation involved relaxation and a lot of it. I slept eight hours a night and took deep naps in the afternoon. I often laid on my bed and stared at the ceiling (a pleasant non-pursuit that I plan on doing more often, per Chesterton's and others' recommendation). Yet I'm wiped out. I've been dragging leaden legs for the past five days, and Marie feels the same. Very strange. How do you feel after a vacation? * * * * * * * Last night, I searched for "Benzedrine" to get information about Kerouac's use of it. In the process, I surfed across this interesting reference at Wikipedia: "In Ian Fleming's novels, James Bond, secret agent 007, frequently uses Benzedrine pills to sharpen his senses and/or keep wide awake for extended periods during his adventures, like "Moonraker", "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "You Only Live Twice". Link. * * * * * * * Radical change or incremental change? I like radical. I believe that a person can, through attitude, simply decide to be nice, holy, whatever. There'll be backsliding, sure, and lots of it, but I don't think a person can decide to become a saint incrementally. He has to decide he wants to be a saint now . . . but then accept the fact that it'll happen in increments. This blog post at Forbes got me thinking about these things. * * * * * * * I followed a link to this book recently: Leftism Revisited: From De Sade and Marx to Hitler and Pol Pot
. I've wanted it for years, but I've never seen it listed for less than $70. Someone needs to get it back into print. * * * * * * * Football season draws near. Here's my nephew/Godson's highlight tape. If you know a college recruiter who's looking for a quick, tough kid who gets overlooked because of his size, send him this reel:
