Callers complaining about loud music coming from a buggy led deputies to charge a 19-year-old Amish man with stealing house numbers and flower pots. David Byler was charged with theft and underage consumption of alcohol, both misdemeanors.

We're uniquely situated to discuss this one. Eric Scheske grew up and lives in an area with one of the highest concentration of Amish (second only to the Amish stronghold in Pennsylvania). He has Amish clients, Amish acquaintances, and an Amish cleaning lady. He tried to get an Amish concubine, but his wife squashed it.

Anyway, he suspects this youth was engaged in the Amish tradition of "sowing one's oats." Amish teens are encouraged to live wildly up until the point when they formally join the church, after which point all wild living ceases. Teens are encouraged to drink and smoke. According to the Amish critics, the tradition extends to crime and wild forms of eroticism, though Eric has a hard time believing that.
