Joe Campbell

Unless you read some relatively-arcane journals or Canadian periodicals, you've probably never heard of Joe Campbell. Eric Scheske has long enjoyed Mr. Campbell's essays for Gilbert Magazine. For those who don't subscribe, you're missing one of the more unique voices in North America.

A father of nine and a pedestrian who has never owned a car or drivers license, Campbell is a funny writer with a different perspective on culture, politics, and everyday living. A collection of his essays has now been published: Take Me Out of the Ball Game. We haven't seen it yet, but if it's as good as his GM essays, it'll be worth the price.

From a review of the book by David Paul Deavel in the most-recent Gilbert Magazine:

Campbell's willing to play the clown perhaps masks a seriousness at the heart of his writing. Like Chesterton he seems to grow more jocular as he plumbs the depths of life.
