Curious about the economics of homebrewing? A friend sends along the following e-mail:

> I just bottled 2 cases of prime quality home brew last night. It tastes pretty good and should be carbonated in a couple of weeks. Variable cost, not including bottles, $0.31/bottle.

That works out to $7.44 a case. Great price for good beer.

But the bottles can be a little steep. He says in a follow-up:

> Bottles can be as little as 10 cents each (the ones that you would return to the store for a deposit). Any will do as long as they have a lip that will accept a crown cap. A case of brown 12 oz new: $10\. Grolsh style with a flip top: $2 each. For 22 oz new brown bottles: 80 cents each.

The bottles, though, can be used again and again (until dropped on pavement during the post-brewing enjoyment).
