There's a nasty homosexual battle being decided in Topeka, Kansas today. Councilwoman Tiffany Muller, the first openly gay officeholder in Kansas, is facing an anti-homosexual challenge from 20-year-old Jael Phelps. Also on the ballot: whether to repeal an ordinance that prohibits Topeka from discriminating against gays in hiring. The vitriol is intense and (sorry to admit it) entertaining. We assume the pro-gay side is likening it to the freedom sought for blacks at Harpers Ferry. We suspect the anti-gay side is also alluding to Harpers, but spelling “ferry” differently. Here's the New York Times story (but you have to be registered).
