> Authorities in Florida are sending convicted sex offenders to jail for violating the terms of their probation by having men's magazines such as *Maxim*.

> Andrew Calderon, 23, was jailed for six days before a judge ordered his release after officers found a racy poster and calendar and copies of *Maxim* in his home earlier this year. . .

> Corrections officials said Calderon, who was on probation for the sexual battery of a mentally disabled relative, committed a violation by having "sexually stimulating" material.

We can't tell whether the Florida corrections officials acted properly. The defendant's lawyer implies that his client is prohibited from possessing obscenity. *Maxim* isn't obscene. But the corrections official implies that the criminal isn't supposed to have material that is sexually-stimulating, which *Maxim* is--overwhelmingly so.

We actually had the tortured pleasure of reading *Maxim* for about nine months. Our office had a subscription to some other magazine that folded. *Maxim* bought out the subscribers, so every month, the pile of temptation was tossed on Eric's desk. The pull-out colognes were good and there were a few entertaining articles, but the girls were, well, ah, ummmmm . . . hard to put down. Eric finally started throwing the magazine away as soon as he received it. There's no reason to dance with the devil when at home you can waltz with a lady.
