21, TV, and Pabst
As I get older, I increasingly dislike the age-21 drinking requirement. I dislike it for a lot of reasons (logic and fairness top the list), but one of the reasons: it makes alcohol more seductive. Once a kid reaches age 21, it's like a new world is opened to him and he plunges in. I drank ample amounts of beer before age 21, but once I was "legal," I hit the bars even harder for a year or so. It was like being denied sex, then having a bunch of courtesans laid at my door. Sex is alluring enough, but when a young man's appetite is whetted yet denied for five years, you better get out the Trojan economy box when women are made available at will. It's kinda like that with alcohol, and it leads to excessive and dangerous drinking. This story is another link of evidence in the anecdotal fence: Alcohol-Related Traffic-Risk Behaviors Among College Students Become Worse at Age 21 * * * * * * * The Regal Beagle, Bada Bing, Cheers, and seven other fictional bars from TV. It ranks Archie Bunker's Place ahead of Cheers, which is absurd, but other than that, it's a good list, with videos. * * * * * * * Pabst Beer is cheap and out-of-fashion. That made it chic, for the people who don't care about chic. That allowed Pabst to raise the price, which in turn made the company worth an un-chic $250 million. The deal is inked. Link.
