Autobiographical Corner
I spent the weekend with my son, Michael (11). Everyone else went to bird-watching camp with the Detroit Audubon Society, an organization, from my estimation, spawned by the devil with Medusa. My wife goes to spend time with her family. Even though I view her desertion an act of betrayal on the level of finding a spouse ogling midget porn, I give her my blessing every year, with the understanding that at least one child stays back with me. Because Bird Camp is a bit grueling (eight hours of bird watching every day, interspersed with Druid-like nature ceremonies) and kids often have some sort of sports function over Memorial Day weekend, I normally get one kid who volunteers willingly to spend a weekend with dad, hanging out and eating out. This year, the volunteer was Michael. * * * * * * * Unfortunately, Michael wanted to see Robin Hood. It turned out to be one of the worst pieces of trash that I've seen in five years. I'm stunned that somebody could botch such a great legend. It's basically a prequel to show us how Robin Hood became Robin Hood . . . but then failed to explain why the King hated him so much to declare him an outlaw. That's just one of many problems. My biggest objection to the movie: The writers made up a background for the character that defies all literary and legendary information over the ages. It was almost like the writers said, "We have this Robin Hood character. No one even knows if he actually existed, much less where he came from, so it's a blank slate. Let's just make up whatever the heck we want." Simply awful. * * * * * * * * Based on the weather so far, it looks like we're in for a hot summer. Try these cooling tips, like keeping your sleeves wet and putting ice on your wrists. BTW: I also read that it's a myth that it takes more energy to turn the AC off then turn it back on than merely to leave it running for eight hours. If you're gonna be gone for eight hours or more, turn it off. * * * * * * * That's it for today. Nasty thunderstorms went through my town yesterday. It appears lightning may have hit my van, and my internet connection is dead. I'm finishing this post at the office, but clients call. Until tomorrow.
