Stream of Consciousness

I had a nice surprise yesterday morning. The morning Mass was being said for my father's soul. I dutifully went, planning to join the half-dozen or so regulars in the pews. I walked into the church during the opening hymn and saw Marie and The Seven. It was nice to have them there with me, since I often find those Masses kind of hard. \* \* \* The day ended well, too. Marie and The Seven have gone out of town for a few days, leaving me home alone. I worked late, then brought a stack of paperwork home. I clicked on the TV at 8:00 and saw that two of my favorite movies of all time were just starting: *Walk the Line* and *GoodFellas*. They were perfect background watching while reviewing work papers since I've seen them both a few times. The little things in life gotta be appreciated. \* \* \* A lawyer could spend his whole life doing *pro bono* work. I spent nine hours at the office yesterday, and billed barely more than half of them. At that pace, I can work myself hard into the poor house. \* \* \* I planted five dozen pea seeds last weekend. The weather here has been gorgeous, and peas are a cool-weather crop. I'm really hoping for a plentiful pea harvest this year. The kids love to pluck them. I'm thinking about planting some hops for the heck of it, but since I don't brew beer, I doubt I'd have any use for them. Yet it seems like such a manly crop. \* \* \* "I hope your damn plane crashes." According to the FX commentary last night during *Walk the Line*, that's what Waylon Jennings jokingly said to Buddy Holly right before Holly climbed into the plane that would take his life. Pretty freaky. I guess Waylon felt bad about it the rest of his life. Waylon was also a liberal, if I recall correctly. In *Suicide of the West*, James Burnham said it was guilt that drove the liberal agenda. Maybe it drove Waylon's politics. \* \* \* I've started that evolutionary fitness regime, at least as I understand it. I did short spurts on the exercise bike last night. I did it for about 15 minutes. I was still a bit breathless 20 minutes after I was done. My one-hour work-outs never had that kind of impact on me. Maybe it is possible to do more in 1/4th the time. We'll see if my waistline corroborates it.
