Prosperity theology fails yet again:
A man posing as a government employee approached a business owner and said he needed to take soil samples from the property.
The next day, the suspect returned with a metal detector claiming he found gold or silver in the soil.
The business owner helped the suspect dig until they found a capsule with a leather scroll. The scroll read that a treasure had been buried, but there was a catch. Treasure hunters had to place $68,000 wrapped in cloth along with a Spanish Catholic Bible on an altar for nine days before the digging could continue. The business owner chipped in $15,000. The suspect and another man also put bundles on the altar and then left.
After several hours the business owner decided to look inside the bundles and found three stacks of newspaper the size of dollar bills, police said.
His money and the suspects were gone.
