Spain's Looming Oppression

Pope Benedict XVI has written a message to Spain's bishops, urging Spain to respect religious freedom. The reason? It's speculated that the homo-lesbian forces in Spain could attempt to require the Church to recognize gay marriages.

Just another example of the intolerance and coercion that takes hold after gays have political success.

The Pope's emphasis on freedom of conscience was evidently a reference to political debates within Spain, where Catholic leaders are discussing the appropriate responses to new legislation that would give same-sex couples the full legal status of marriage. (The new Spanish government has already liberalized laws on divorce and abortion.) Some Church officials have demanded a "conscience clause" allowing Catholics to avoid involvement in the recognition of homosexual marriages; several Church leaders have gone further, saying that Christian may have a duty to engage in civil disobedience rather than cooperate with the policy.
