A Mother Teresa pic and quote.

Channeling Joseph Pieper

With male labor-force participation rates in decline and the concept of universal basic income nudging into the mainstream, idleness has taken on new political urgency. Yet in a culture dominated by forms of empty, solitary leisure aimed at harvesting our data (“We need hours a day” of people's attention, the new boss of HBO recently told his employees), a slide into indolence can be more alienating than much work. Leisure time can all too often feel like working overtime to keep up with culture.

The Death of Alexander the Great: Hangover?

Many of us have long commiserated with the possibility that a hangover killed Alexander the Great. But did it?

In the year 323 BC, Alexander enjoyed an overdue vacation in the deluxe metropolis of Babylon in Mesopotamia. This was one of the great cities of the Persian empire and over the centuries had grown accustomed to looking after the needs of invaders. Its Hanging Gardens were one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. A few weeks there of uninterrupted leisure and pleasure were just what Alexander and his careworn soldiers needed.

The youthful Macedonian monarch had spent a good ten years fighting his way nonstop through the Persian empire to its Indian frontier, deposing the Great King and seizing power himself. After winning victories in the Punjab and along the Indus River, he marched back to civilization through a searing desert, losing thousands of his men for lack of water before reaching the safety and the comforts of Mesopotamia.

Mr. Leftist, Tear Down this Wall!

Dave Chappelle's comedy signalled that he doesn't care if the SJWs consider him woke. Now Brees stands up to them a bit. Hopefully, the "Wall of Wokeness" that terrorizes our culture is falling.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees defended his participation in a video that was released by the religious organization Focus on the Family, a group that is widely recognized as anti-LGBTQ.

Kramer was Afraid of Clowns, Too

The persona of the creepy clown really came into its own after serial killer John Wayne Gacy was captured. In the 1970s, Gacy appeared at children's birthday parties as “Pogo the Clown” and also regularly painted pictures of clowns. When the authorities discovered that he had killed at least 33 people, burying most of them in the crawl space of his suburban Chicago home, the connection between clowns and dangerous psychopathic behavior became forever fixed in the collective unconscious of Americans.

Then, for several months in 2016, creepy clowns terrorized America.

Reports emerged from at least 10 different states. In Florida, fiendish clowns were spotted lurking by the side of the road. In South Carolina, clowns were reportedly trying to lure women and children into the woods.

More Woke Terrorism

The food is bad for the children . . . and they don't agree with our political positions.

Several faculty members at the University of Kansas are pushing administrators to ban Chick-fil-A from campus, arguing its presence violates the “safety” and “mental well-being” of students and staff ”“ and citing the franchise's Christian values.
