Mongol Christians

Interesting Tweet last week: "When Mongols sacked #Baghdad in 1258 & killed almost all its residents, only lives of the city's Nestorian Christians was spared (they were asked to stay in their church)." Embedded Tweet below.

There was a large Nestorian Christian contingent in the Mongol ranks, due to the conversion of Wang Khan and the important and respected Kerait Mongols. "Wang," it is believed, became westernized into "John" and the source of the Prester John legends spawned by Marco Polo . . . that gave Europeans hope that the Mongols were converted Christians riding west to beat the snot out of the Muslims.

Mongolians write in the Nestorian alphabet, still today. https://t.co/G7g53DE8nu
