Miscellaneous Rambling

Whew, the Christmas frenzy is over. Every year it's the same thing: High energy and expectations going in, utter exhaustion coming out, but with expectations more or less met. I was so tired last night, I was concerned that I was coming down with something, but it was a nice five-day celebration. * * * * * * * And as a UM graduate and Wolverine fan, I got an unexpected Christmas present: Jim Harbaugh. At least, that's what it looks like. We'll see. The UM football program is in a death spiral. They need a Harbaugh or similar big name to staunch the bleeding fast. We'll see, but I'm optimistic. * * * * * * * Not so much hope for my Detroit Lions. Horrible game yesterday with horrible referee calls. I'm reasonably certain the Packers would've won anyway, but I hate to see the Michael Jordan rules in action. Granted, my Lions are pretty dirty and don't deserve many breaks, but geeeesh. Be subtle about it next time. * * * * * * * While driving back from my in-laws in the eastern suburbs of Detroit, I marvelled at the total wreckage of homes along I-94 and I-96. At one point, I think I counted ten straight houses that were either burned out or obviously too dilapidated for occupation. Marie later sent me this link: A stark, unsentimental look at Detroit's rapid slide. Startling pics. When you flip through them, take note of the way nature is taking over, swamping everything with its vegetation. It's ugly, but in a few more years, it won't be much more ugly than any ol' overgrown prairie. * * * * * * * A TDE reader sends this along: The Atheist's Ten Commandments. Not quite as pithy as the original ten . . . nor as cogent . . . nor as supernatural. But the vacuity is worth a chuckle.
