During 2012, my parish raised money to build a community center for a poor village in the Philippines. It doubles as a typhoon shelter. It paid big dividends last week. From USA Today: "Michigan native Elsa Thomasma was among those here to help. Thomasma was here before the storm as are many Americans who have been volunteering in the Philippines for decades. The typhoon that struck here 10 days ago destroyed the village Thomasma had been working. But none of the farm workers and their families who loved in Cangumbang died. The people say they survived because of Thomasma and the community center and storm shelter built with money donated by parishioners from her Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis, Mich." I just attended Mass with Elsa's father. She's a fine lady from a fine family
