H.I.F.

I read a ton of Brownson while writing my biographical essay about him. Brownson's apologetics are like nothing you've ever read: opaque and thick, drawing upon the philosophy of Pierre Leroux, relentlessly and painstakingly logical, almost as though he were merely following the observation Daniel Webster made to him when Brownson was a young man ("Take care how you examine the Catholic Church, unless you are willing to become a Catholic, for Catholic doctrines are logical" More). Some day, I want to go back through those Brownson works (another line item on my "scholarly" bucket list). But in the meantime, I'll settle for lesser endeavors, like re-reading this fine passage from Russell Kirk's The Conservative Mind (found, of all places, on Facebook).
