Max Beerbohm never completed his undergraduate studies. He dropped out of Oxford before his last year. Why? It was superfluous. At a very young age, he was already a rising man of letters. "He needed a degree," Joseph Epstein once noted, "about as much as the pope needs a bowling trophy." Partial Payments, p. 106.

Someone should put together a book of short biographies about successful people who never finished college. Just as reading the saints helps put a person into a holy frame of mind, reading about people who eschewed the hallowed degree would help put people in a sane frame of mind.
