Yes, Shoot the Messenger . . . He’s a Liar
Meteorologists ought to be shot. Sound harsh? It’s not. As an attorney, I try hard to be honest with my clients when I don’t know the answer to a question. If I’m stumped, I say so.
Not the meteorologist. When have you ever heard a weatherman say, “You know, it’s just impossible to say what’s going to happen over the next ten days”? Answer: Never. And the ten-day forecast at the Weather Channel always thumps out an unequivocal prediction.
Yet those clowns have been wrong for the entire month of March. Back in late February, they said night temperatures would move above freezing, and day temperatures would be in the forties, by March 8th. We are now into the first week of Spring and we’ve gotten relentlessly pounded by cold and snow . . . yet they have repeatedly assured us that warmer temperatures are just seven days away. They have, literally, pushed back the warm temperature prediction four times now, and there’s no end in site.
My hat goes off to the Chicago Tribune, though. In an article yesterday (which I can’t locate now), they said this cold weather could continue into early April due to some sort of Arctic pressure that won’t let up.
So, gardening has gotten off to another rough start this year. Seedlings that should be comfortable in my greenhouses and cold frames are inside the house, competing for limited room under my two grow lamps . . . and beginning to look sickly. A long-time TDE reader and gardener told me that he’s been gardening for nearly forty years and last year was the worst year ever for gardening. I fear this year is going to give 2012 a run for its money.Bookmark it: del.icio.us | Reddit | Slashdot | Digg | Facebook | Technorati | Google | StumbleUpon | Window Live | Tailrank | Furl | Netscape | Yahoo | BlinkList
