Miscellany

Whew. I hope this week goes better than last week, which may have been the hardest of the past couple of years. I'm glad John Peterson gave me those GKC shorts to use when life is too busy for blogging. Anyone enjoying them? * * * * * * * I reported last week that BXVI is going to tweet. His first post is still 48 hours away, but the bigots have already shown up in force. If you want to see how Catholic haters express themselves, click here and scroll down. * * * * * * * Rest easy, the federal government is taking care of everything, right down to the eggnog: "Somewhere in the vast array of federal rules and regulations – the 10,000 Commandments – is one specifying the minimum of milk fat that eggnog shall contain." * * * * * * * This reminds me of my hesitation to help out with a local charity function last Wednesday. Two clubs I belong to take poor kids to meet Santa and get them warm boots. It's a nice function and I've helped in, I'm guessing, 15 of the past 18 years. But this year, I wasn't inclined to. My honest thought: "Screw 'em. I'm silly busy at the office and don't have time. Let Obama take care of them." But because it's Christmas and we're talking about little kids, I again volunteered for nearly two hours, then went back to the office and worked until 9:30 pm. I'm glad I did it, but I swear: I'm getting more jaded by the second. * * * * * * * My family was chuckling about this story yesterday: three corpulent girls dine out. The bartender types "fat girls" in his restaurant's billing software program to help identify them. When the receipt printed out, so did the socially-awkward identification. That's kinda funny, kinda sad, but how did it reach the press? Did the heavy girls take it to the newspaper? I felt bad for them at first, but heck, if they then advertised it, I'm guessing they're not ashamed of their weight, so where's the harm? I'm not ashamed of my receding hairline. If someone wrote "balding guy" on the receipt, I wouldn't care. * * * * * * * Reading time has been scarce, but I'm into chapter 2 of Taleb's new book. It's great so far.
