Garden pic from yesterday: peppers in the foreground, then The Verdant Pathway, then watermelons (next to trellis), brussels sprout, tomatoes to the right, grapes further back. This is about 40% of my garden.

Garden Stuff

Whatta hard year to garden. The Spring was hot, then cool, then hot again . . . and always windy. And now this heat. It's been tough, very tough, but I'm sticking it out and waiting to rake in that $28 worth of vegetables. * * * * * * * Actually, I've probably raked in over $30 worth so far: $1 worth of cherry tomatoes, $10 of blackberries and currants, $3 of cucumbers, $20 of greens (spinach, kale, chard), $2 of beans and peas. And the big part of the year--tomatoes, peppers, and grapes--hasn't started yet. If things go well, I should harvest well over $200 worth, which would work out to about 75 cents an hour for the effort. * * * * * * * Thanks to input from a TDE reader, I'm quickly becoming a fan of Johnny Seeds. Go here for some nifty gardening software and spreadsheets. I'm planning my Fall garden. The Fall-planting calculator has come in handy.

Miscellany

Tired of the hand-holding during the Our Father? You're not the only one. It might even border on illegitimacy, like breaking into an aisle jig during a hymn. * * * * * * * The Sandusky, Ohio history blog recently summed up the reasons why the traditional saloon did more to help this country than any government program: "The neighborhood tavern was often a center of social life for men (rarely women) in Sandusky, particularly before the Prohibition era. It was a place to meet friends, make business contacts (or even conduct business), listen to music, or sing along with others, or just serve as a respite from the drudgery of work." * * * * * * * Things that build society, good. Things that kill society, bad. Beer: Good. State: Bad. Repeat three times, then go to your neighbor's and share a quart. * * * * * * * Did I mention that Scott Hahn is coming to my parish? July 21, 10:00-3:00, three lectures, $10. If you want tickets, let me know (ejscheske@yahoo.com).
