Is the world slowing down? It seems like everything is moving slow. Amazon packages are taking twice as long to arrive. Charter Internet is moving at a crawl. I know I'm moving slower these days. Maybe I'm just setting a trend. * * * * * * * A major shelf in my library collapsed yesterday . . . or was pulled down, bringing down a couple dozen books. Juvenile eviction proceedings have been started. * * * * * * * Red troglodytes: Millions of Chinese live in caves. It's actually pretty cool, especially in the summer. And warm in the winter. I wouldn't mind getting me a cave, though I'm not sure whether they're secure from theft. Then again, China has no crime, right? * * * * * * * Government programs cripple charity. And when charity limps along anyway, government can just kill her outright: Bloomberg bans food donations to shelters. * * * * * * * The current Atlantic features Ben Bernanke on the cover, dubbing him "The Hero." They say he saved us from disaster. Paint me dubious. I admit that he inherited a horrible situation and averted a catastrophe, but it ain't over yet. * * * * * * * What are fellow anarcho-capitalists reading? Click here for a few odd lists of books. I consider myself well-read. And I'm even better book-cover read (I love perusing bookstores and libraries, even if I'm not going to get anything). But I've never heard of most of these. * * * * * * * Speaking of book covers: Can we s-can the cliche, "You can't judge a book by its cover"? It's obvious that you can. If the cover features two huge breasts and a title like, "Nymphs with Implants Gone Wild," I know it ain't a reflection on the thoughts of Marcus Aurelius. I bring this up because I counsel my kids to form quick opinions about people based on eccentric or bold sartorial or hair habits: piercings, spiked hair, torn clothes, tattoos, camel toe shorts, wife beaters, etc. Sure, you don't know for sure what's inside, so you must be ready to change your opinion and you must try to be kind, but don't totally disregard the cover. * * * * * * * Happy spring.
