Pretty good article: Pope Francis and the Culture of Encounter. It spends a fair amount of time summarizing some points made by Gabriel Marcel. I spent a lot of time reading the existentialists, and it always interested me that Marcel was a Catholic one. His prose is hard to read . . . or maybe it's just hard to penetrate his ideas. Either way, he's worth pulling off the bookshelf, which I'm going to make myself do this summer.

Fr. James Schall recommends Marcel's Creative Fidelity and Homo Viator. I remember starting Creative Fidelity, but I ended up putting it back on the shelf. I think I'll try Homo this time (no, that's not a Michael Sam reference). Also Man Against Mass Society, which I believe impressed Merton.
