Miscellaneous Rambling

Best link of my weekend reading: The Ten Commandments of Government. They're all relevant and accurate, but I think I liked the Tenth Commandment the best: "As government grows ever more powerful, it must also become increasingly oppressive through compulsion and force. To do otherwise would mean government must shrink, and this it cannot do." * * * * * * *

Recommended by a long-time TDE reader: The Bishop's Corner on Annunciation Radio. * * * * * * *

Meant to run last week: "John Taylor Explains Why Economic Failure Causes Political Polarization." The problem is, it's not an op-ed about how economic failure causes political polarization, but it is a great and pithy summary of what happened to our economy over the past 15 years. * * * * * * *

My hand and mouse are hovering over the "buy now" button: For Who the Bell Tolls: One Man's Quest for Grammatical Perfection. From a book review of it: "With admirable clarity, Marsh goes on to explain the gerund and subjunctive, the difference between comparing to and comparing with, and the correct use of 'whom', avoidance of which has given this book its deliberately teeth-grating title. Cleverly, Marsh here inverts the usual reasons for understanding conventions. You need to know the rule for 'whom' not because you should use 'whom' whenever appropriate (because it will sometimes sound pompous), but because you need absolutely to avoid using 'whom' when it should actually be 'who', since that will sound both pompous and stupid."
