Miscellany

So Romney chooses Paul Ryan. Alright, I'll vote in November. I hardly consider myself part of a Republican base that Romney is trying to mobilize, and I still think voting in national elections is mostly a waste of time and signals approval for a system that has become nothing but a sham, but I have to go to the polls anyway to vote in a local election. As long as I'm there, I'll pull the lever for the Mormon with Michigan roots and his Catholic VP. * * * * * * * The U.S. claimed the most medals in the Olympics: the most gold, the most silver, the most bronze. The biggest reason? Maybe the women. They won almost twice as many gold (29) as the men (17). I'm not a big fan of female athletics (I incline to the view that sports are martial in character, and women aren't wired for that character), but most of the women who play at the Olympic level impress me favorably. * * * * * * * Related: "The U.S. is leading China in both number of gold medals and number of total medals. In response, China said that's nice but we still have all your money." Conan. * * * * * * * I've always liked Wired magazine. I never subscribed, but I have often surfed its pages and it always struck me as a pretty solid rag. And then I saw this post at Cafe Hayek. I was stunned to see a mainstream magazine allow such a blatant distortion (indeed, downright fabrication) regarding the work of an important thinkers. In this case, Friedrich Hayek. Kinda stunning, in a nerd-like way.
